Combatting the Excessive use of Plastic Water Bottles

Did you know...

1. Over 60 million plastic bottles end up in landfills and incinerators per day.

2. Plastics may take up to 1000 years to degrade

3. 90% of the trash in our ocean is made up of plastics
4. Plastic uses 8% of the world's oil production

MISSION STATEMENT

We are a team of passionate high school environmentalists representing Whitney High School Ecology and Wildlife Club from Cerritos, California. After our biology teacher and proud climate change activist Ms. Perry banned the use of plastic water bottles in our classroom, we came to the shocking realization that over 60 million plastic bottles end up in landfills and incinerators per day. This is particularly troubling because plastics may take up to 1000 years to degrade and their minuscule particles plague our oceans and soil. We firmly believe that it is our duty to follow our teacher's footsteps and lower the use of plastic water bottles in our community.

Our S.M.A.R.T. Goal

We want to be advocates towards Subaru Pacific and ban the use of plastic water bottles at their dealership by constructing a 6-foot art display made of plastic water bottles collected from Subaru, local elementary schools, and our high school to visually present our plastic waste to shock viewers. With our display, we want to collect at least 100 signatures from Subaru Pacific customers and employees from November 18th to November 22nd to present to Subaru Pacific so 53 pounds of water bottles will be conserved each week.

Grades Of Green

In order to fulfill our goals, we will be competing in the prestigious Grades of Green Competition. We hope we can put our talents and drive to good use competing in Grades of Green. Wish us luck!
